One of the things that anoys me more then anything else. As a teenage, upper-middle class straight male caucajun in the top 2 pecentile, the world looks at me with the view that my life is perfect, I have no hardships, and thus if I say anything that could even remotely be considered demeening, I'm a horrible person. I am in no way saying that my life sucks, or is even bad at all. I am quite satisfied, but that isn't the point. People who's lives are just as good as mine, walk around like they deserve something extra because the are a minority, they're of the oposite sex, they don't have as much money as me, or some other reason. The bottom line is, they don't.
The world (or at least the parts from which most of these people hail) is for the most part a very equal oportunity place. Racism is probably as gone as it's ever going to be, women have obtained equal rights, and homosexuality is becomming more accepted every day. Now again, I'm not saying that the world is a perfect place, or that these problems are eliminated. However,by no means are they the most dire things facing society today.
Oprah saying that she wants a black person to edit her book is seen as "heroic" and a huge step against racism. But if I were to write a book and insist on a white editor, I'd be called a racist. What is the difference? It's not like minorities are repressed or banned from edditing books. Double standards like this are, in my opinion, a much bigger problem then any of those I listed above. It combines al of them into one, then says it's fighting against them.
I call on everyone next time they see something like this to stand up and say it's bullshit! If you are a minority, lowerclass, female, then don't let your self be made to look like an arrogant self indulging pitty pot. Tell them to focus on something more worth while, like mayby eliminating racism/sexism in places where it is a problem, or something else.
And that is my rant.
