It never fails. Every time I play through Majora's Mask, I look up at the moon at least once and wonder about its origins. Not only is the thing unorthodox, sporting eyeballs and a mouth; but is also angry with a placid inner-sanctum.
I often theorize that "the moon" from Majora's Mask is not actually the moon, but perhaps some cosmic being, possessed by Majora. However, this theory seems a bit off-kilter for several reasons. (Mainly the fact that the other temple bosses mask's/spirits appear inside the moon.)
Another conjecture is that the moon is simply the Terminian moon, which may have always sported an odd face. (I however find more holes in this theory than any other).
Finally, perhaps the moon has a gigantic mask placed upon its surface, causing it to be animated.
There are a lot of arguments and ideas I could kick around, but I thought it'd be a bit more fun/interesting to let the whole community post their theories about this enigmatic celestial body. So, what do you thing the dang thing is?

Well, there's as many theories as there are guesses. I've always gone with it being a regular moon before majora possessed it, and gaining a face and ect. afterwards.

As more people post, you will find this is where my warnign about the 4th day comes in. Some people say that MM created the moon, which is actualy a bomb, to destroy Termina, but I see no real evidence to say it is anything but the real moon.

...I'm fairly sure it's actually the moon. Everyone in the game calls it "The Moon," not "That big rock that recently appeared in the sky with the face."

SoF, the warning is up, if someone tries day 4, I am not responsible for any warning and/or BAN HAMMERing which occur.
Having said that, uz, I agree. Even the face is only acknowledged once by the cheery dancing/juggling guys. You'd think if there was never a face on it before someone would have noticed.

Warning first, before the ban hammer. Some people don't read every thing, even though they should.
I agree with mattocks an UZ. The dialog of the NPCs show's it.

What are you guys talking about with the fourth day? I must've missed something in the game, because the moon either fell or the four redead looking gods would hold it up.
So...please don't banhammeh me!

There are several people who try to use glitches in the game, like the fourth day glitch, to explain the more than wacky theories.

Basicaly, it's only reached through hacking or a glitch, and it is actualy the very begining of the first day. Everything is where it is basicaly as soon as "Dawn of the First Day" comes up. However, the moon is realy small, but still in the same palce. People try to claim that this means it was "originaly" mean to start off looking realy far away. There is no vilidity to it whatsoever, and shall be disscussed no further. THE AWESOME HAS SPOKEN!

I think that it gains that... twisted face after Majora gets too it.
Oh my... I just realized something really horrifying. Maybe the moon... flips over. It always had the face, and Majora flips the moon over so the people can see it. Think about this for a sec. We've never been to the other side of our Earth moon. And as far as I know, We've never seen it. Since the same side of the Moon always faces Earth... what's to say that there isn't a strange formation on the other side of it. Could Termina's Moon been just that. (I think it's the creepy music I'm listening to that set the stage for that... *looks over shoulder* Paranoia will destroy ya. *looks over shoulder again* -whimper-)

But if the face was never there before, don't you think there would be a few people going "OMFG!!! THERE"S A F**KING FACE ON IT!!! AHHHHHH!"?

The explanation is simple! All the termainians are near-sighted, and couldn't see the moon until it came crashing down!
Simple!

Mattocks has a very good.....and very loud....point. Of course, I've heard the many theories that no body but link can actually see the face, which would make it link imaginationland doing it. Get's all psychological.

Get's all psychological. But I believe it's the jugglers, who make reference to the face. So they can obviously see it, but they don't seem too disturbed by it.

Not directly, they say it very abstractly. Kinda like "Almost as if it had a face" or something like that.
